The Hudson Bay Hunters made their return to a senior hockey league for the first time since 2015. As expected, the team showed its youth and inexperience at this level. Bredenbury Cougars were better in all aspects as they rolled to an 11-1 win before a good crowd which has been waiting for senior hockey action.
Four players did the goal-scoring for the Cougars. There were three hattricks (Sean Kolodziejski, Zachory Korchinski, and Don St. Marie) while Cody Rock added the other two. St. Marie, Korchinski, and Rock each added two assists.
The Hunters struggled to generate offence, but they did force Bredenbury goaltender Adam Stokes to make some solid saves. Daylon Campbell had the lone Hudson Bay goal.
The Cougars grabbed a 4-0 lead after just 11 minutes, and it was only 5-0 after 40 minutes. However, the roof at the Wally Dawyduk Arena caved in on the home team in the third as they gave up six goals.
The Hunters only had one import dressed for this game, and the team has to learn to work together, especially defensively, as they strive to be competitive in a tough league.
The Bredenbury Cougars swept a weekend doubleheader in Hudson Bay as they backed up Saturday’s 11-1 win with a 9-4 triumph Sunday afternoon.
The Hunters put up a much better effort as they came out with a much better defensive effort. As often happens with beginning teams, what could go wrong did go wrong. The game was tied at three midway through the second when a Hudson Bay player took a five-minute major for interference.
After the Cougars went ahead 4-3, Hudson Bay’s starting goaltender pulled his groin and was helped off the ice. With no back-up available, they dressed forward Ronnie Budd to finish the last 27:38 of the
game. The Cougars pushed in another five goals but the sub did quite well for himself as the first two were scored on the power play.
The Cougars had four-point (two goals, two assists) performances from Sean Kolodziejski and Don St. Marie. Single goals were counted by Colby Jacobs, Lee Janett, Zachory Korchinski, Noah Tonn and
Cody Rock.
Answering for the Hunters were Cody Chasse, Daylon Campbell, Brady Myhr and Alex Kovach.
The Hunters are off until a home game against Theodore December 7, while the Cougars next play at home Friday, November 22 when Ochapowace visits Bredenbury Arena.
